Announcing the GEORGIA PUPPY CARAVAN!
August 19 - 23, 2009 (Wednesday to Sunday)
New Jersey to Georgia and back!

Animal Rescue Flights (ARF) member and leader of Rescue M.O.M.S. (Making of Miracle Stories), Karen LaSasso, is planning a major rescue operation in support of the dogs and puppies in the kill shelters of Georgia. The GEORGIA PUPPY CARAVAN will bring awareness to all the highly adoptable animals in our nation’s shelters. “Why buy, when a shelter dog will die?

Through publicity garnered by the event, our country will get to see, up close and personal, the wonderful, loving animals that need homes and need our help. So far, over 50 cars and 2 RV’s will be part of the caravan leaving Lindenwold, NJ, and trekking to Georgia together. Our friends at RescueInk, for whom ARF transported a rescued bait dog a few months ago, will be taking their RescueInk van along.

Mr. Dave Roehm of Ningum Films along with his business partner (who has a se ries on the Discovery Channel) will be traveling with the caravan, along with a film crew to shoot a documentary of this journey. We need volunteers to help in various ways…I’ll detail that at the end of this email after giving you a little more information about the itinerary.

Many thanks to Jennifer and Tamara for sharing our Good Dad Honor Roll with their readers. Check out the blogs of these pet lovers who helped spread the word!

Jennifer posted on Worthy (Cause) Wednesday with the note, “you’ll see that my Daniela has written a rather terse note to her ‘Papi.’ She isn’t much for sentimentality, our Dani, but her donation shows she cares.” http://blog.jennescalona.com/2009/06/17/worthy-cause-wednesday-save-pets-by-adding-dad-to-the-good-dad-honor-roll/

Tamara’s fun post explores her “doggy-style indicator.”

“When I notice a man really bonding and caring for a canine (or any other animal the way they deserve), it gives me an indication of a man’s heart. In contemplating love and partnership, only these types of men pass my initial “sniff test”. In other words brothas, if you ain’t got at least this, go fetch!” http://albrightcreative.wordpress.com/2009/06/17/pondering-doggie-style/

Memories of Dad, part 4

What is your favorite story of your dad with a pet?

From Pedro: “My dad was singing one day with his favorite pet, a Rottweiler. We actually caught this on video and it is absolutely priceless. The dog began howling as my dad sang. They were remarkably singing the same tune.

Another amazing dog for my dad was the stray that my brother found. Near the end of my dad’s life, he was home but in a hospital bed. This dog would stand guard at the foot of the bed. He instinctively knew that my dad was gravely ill. He would bark before the doorbell rang, alerting us that someone was approaching the house. My dad loved this dog as much as the Rottweiler and it was obvious this dog reciprocated. Who knows what the dog’s fate might have been if my brother had not brought it home. Since my dad’s death, the dog is being well cared by my brother, although it is still standing guard for my mom at her home.”

Memories of Dad, part 3

Are you a Dad with a memorable pet story? Today’s blog entry is from a dad sharing his own funny moment.

From Dana: “I have a funny story about me (I’m a dad) and a dog we once had. I waited about three years to tell my wife and kids. Somehow it came up while we were out to dinner as a family. It goes like this:

At the time I smoked and I used to use that as an excuse to take the dog out to the back yard before going to bed. It was a very cold winter night, snowing lightly. The hood of my coat was zipped up tight around my face. I found a dark area to take a leak while the dog was running around. After a brief snowball fight with the dog, who caught every one we went back in the house. As I was patting his head before going to bed, I found it was all wet. I had peed on the dog’s head and didn’t even know it!

As I admitted this to my three kids, they all spontaneously spit out what they were drinking, most of which landed on me. My wife belted me under the table.”

From Pamela: “Our first dog, Vixen (named for the reindeer of course) never was convinced he was a dog. He was a cocker spaniel collie mix with an aggressive streak. One night my dad had stretched out on the living room floor to watch a game on TV. One of the sofa cushions under his head and a drink (scotch and water) by his hand. As Dad went to take a drink, Vixen was front paws down, hind quarters up snarling over the highball. My dad just rolled over, put his forearms down and crouched with his butt up in the air and snarled back. When we all tumbled into the living room to see what all the noise was about there was my dad and Vixen, nose to nose growling over a half full glass of Cutty Sark.”

Sharing Memories of Dad, part 1

What is your favorite story of your dad with a pet? Check back this week for more stories each day (and add your own story in the comment section).

From Kathy: “We have a beautiful Shetland Sheepdog named Lady. I brought her with me one weekend to visit Dad. As Dad and I took Lady for a walk on the beach, she would run ahead and then back to us. All along our walk, people would stop to admire Lady, and comment on how beautiful and sweet she was. When we got back home, Dad told his wife, “We got more attention from Lady than if I’d been walking down the beach with Rita Hayworth!”

From James: “My favorite remembrance of my dad and our dogs is not so much a single story as it is how we related to one another through our dogs. My dad had beagles that he took out into the country on a routine basis. There might be two, three, or maybe five beagles with him. Dad enjoyed the time spent listening to the dogs out in the fields, the beagles barking on a hot trail, him sitting on the tailgate of his truck with the thermos mug of coffee in his hands. I joined him often, starting when I was about seven or eight. By then, hunting rabbits and killing them for food wasn’t necessary. It was more the quality of the time spent together enjoying what nature had given us, exploring the woods and fields, trusting in the noses and intuition of the dogs to jump the prey and circle it back to us. We still took the guns, sometimes just for target shooting, sometimes for protection from the wild pigs or the feral dogs that might roam the woods, but no longer for bringing down the rabbit. My dad and these dogs taught me about caring for one another and being integral parts of a greater circle.”

I hope with all my heart that this letter finds it’s way to Ms. King. We have so much to thank you for. I would also like to share my story with you about how far the three of us have come since you entered our life. When I first met Ms. King I was almost homeless and trying to find someone to foster care my 2 dogs, Raggae and Rasta (Toy Poodles.) I couldn’t take care of them any longer and I didn’t want to give them away. I really love those two — as if they were human children.
